over. Do not expect others to solve or
stop cybersecurity problems for your
organization. Cyber risks pose physical
and potentially catastrophic risks to
many industry verticals, including

outheast Gas recently underwent
an extensive cybersecurity
evaluation by Carr, Riggs and
Ingram, the company's financial
auditors. The greater emphasis on
cybersecurity for Southeast Gas
is driven in part by the company's
service to Fort Rucker, which requires
additional security measures to be in
place with their utilities.
"Taking greater cybersecurity steps
is a responsible business practice," says
Southeast Gas Information Services
Manager Robby Dubose. From his
perspective, "Utilities are vulnerable to
possible criminal activity online. Yes, we
want to protect our customers' data, but
we also want to protect the operation of
our system from other outside threats."
As a result of the company's
cybersecurity evaluation, Southeast

the oil and gas industry. Over reliance
on reactive security and check box
compliance are proven recipes for
failures in mitigating cyber risks, as
routinely seen in the news. The oil and
Gas is implementing some of the
recommendations made. And, the
evaluation also revealed some things
the company was already doing that
helped keep data secure.
"We already have security
measures in place, but there are
always improvements that can be
made. Some of these are low-cost, and
some can cost thousands of dollars,"
Dubose says. For example, Southeast
Gas has secured webpages and a
password policy in place already, but
the evaluation revealed that some
updates needed to be made to the
password policy.
Carr, Riggs and Ingram provided
a detailed report following their
cybersecurity evaluation. The report
provides a roadmap of possible
improvements, and allows the

gas industry has taken major steps at
reducing cyber risk over the last several
years, but in security, the job is never
done as long as there are capable
adversaries wanting access.
Southeast Gas Information Services
staff to prioritize certain areas where
additional security is needed.
Some of the recommendations
Southeast Gas plans to implement
include:
* Intrusion prevention and detection
* Modified procedures on network
passwords
* Computer and server updates
* Chain-of-command procedures
* Ticketing system for requests
through Information Services
* Monitoring activity and changes to
server and network
Dubose has practical advice for
systems like Southeast Gas as they look
at their cybersecurity. He suggests,
"Make your best effort in the most
economical way to protect your
company and your customers."
