ne of the challenges of today's municipal gas system
is to continue to grow without burdening existing
customers and taxpayers. The catch is that
existing fixed costs can only be diminished by
expansion of throughput and customer base. This
is not a new problem but has been faced by investor
owned utilities (IOU) and municipal systems for years. The promise of
greater return typically provides the funding for IOUs but, what is the source
of growth for municipals?
The answer lies in the ability of gas systems to grow throughput with essentially
no new capital investment or system expansion. The solution is plug and play
Combined Heat and Power (CHP) installations. Long-time industry participants
will think this sounds like a bit of a pipe dream. Perhaps they remember the
traditional process of hiring engineers and consultants to design, bid,
and build a cogeneration facility on site along with the expense and
extensive on-site work. However, with the advent of historically low
and stable long-term natural gas prices and new CHP technology, it
is time to revisit the opportunity.
New types of engines and vastly improved electronic
control systems have created an opportunity for a new day
in distributed generation. One example is the plug and
play technology deployed by 2G Energy Inc. (2G) in St.
Augustine, Fla. They have been able to incorporate
engines designed specifically for the combustion
