THE SOURCE - Fall 2017 - 40

s APGA enters its 56th year, I'm honored to serve as your Chairman, and I look forward to
continuing the essential work of advocacy and education provided by our organization
to lawmakers, regulators, and consumers nation-wide. The year ahead will be filled with
opportunities to defend our product and to work with other energy providers to find and apply our
product in the most efficient ways.
Beginning my tenure as Chairman, I can't help but reflect on the leadership provided last year by
Jim Hodges. Jim laid the groundwork through initiatives like the fall APGA Operations Conference and
our continued emphasis on direct-use through the Look Closer marketing campaign. He also led our
organization mightily as we provided comments and rebuttals to the proposed furnace rule. Thank you
for leading us well, Jim.
Our industry brings a valuable commodity to the market, and this year, I'd like to suggest that our
industry provides something even greater for our nation - security. Natural gas represents a secure
energy source, a secure economy and a secure environment for this generation and many more.
This fall, our systems will join together under the APGA umbrella in another Strategic Planning
session. I encourage each of you to participate in this opportunity to direct and shape the future of
APGA. During our last planning sessions of this type, the concept of our Direct-Use Task Group was
developed. Our work through the Direct-Use Task Group has led to numerous opportunities to work
alongside other organizations in the natural gas realm to advance the cause of the direct-use of natural
gas appliances. The past two years' work in this area has resulted in set-aside funding for the direct-use
of natural gas within the 2017 Omnibus bill. Within the Building Technologies budget, the Omnibus
bill would provide $10,000,000 for research and development for energy efficiency efforts related to
the direct-use of natural gas in residential applications, including gas heat pump heating and water
heating, on-site combined heat and power, and natural gas appliance venting.
Our organization, comprised of more than 700 municipal gas systems in 36 states, which work
alongside 100 or so associate members, solely represents the interests of municipal gas systems at
the legislative and regulatory levels. More than ever before, APGA is equipped to educate and compel
change across the energy horizon.
As we continue our work to promote natural gas nationally, I look forward to serving each of you as
this year's APGA Chairman!
Sincerely,

Greg Henderson
