afety is a priority for all of us, but how are we sharing the
safety message, and who is the best audience to target? By
educating a child you are educating a community. In order to
work with children, there must be a commitment to the longgame and belief that your efforts will generate results for
many years to come. It is sometimes hard to appreciate fully

the effect that long-term education, done correctly and effectively, can make on an
individual child because the results can be long spread. Once out of school, educating
people becomes much more difficult, opinions have been formulated and in many
cases, it is just too late to make a lasting impact.

Kindergarten through 12th grade
teachers have a tremendous amount of
information that they are required to teach
throughout a school year. Natural gas safety
is not part of that required curriculum. So,
how can a municipal gas utility expect to
educate students in a way that will make
a difference? Municipal utilities know
that there is a need for energy and safety
education, and so do most teachers and
principals.
"We had a gas leak at our school where
the entire building had to evacuate and be
relocated in under 8 minutes; so we found
this (natural gas safety education piece) very

The National Energy Foundation
(NEF) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit education
organization, committed to the
development and implementation of
supplementary educational materials
and programs. NEF's education resources
relate primarily to energy, safety, natural
resources, science, math, technology,
conservation and energy efficiency and the
environment. We have developed a method
and curriculum to support both municipal
utilities and teachers in their mutual efforts
to educate students on safely and efficiently
using natural gas. Many components
of natural gas and natural gas safety fit
neatly into classroom curriculum through
science content about natural resources
and the wise use of energy sources.
Safety ties well into standards on health,
wellness and safety in helping students
learn to make wise decisions regarding
possible dangerous situations. The ability
to work within schools and align with state
curriculum is a great advantage.
Utilities throughout the United States
have been working closely with NEF
to provide engaging and up-to-date
energy-related learning opportunities to
