sk the average American: "Where does the natural
gas flowing through our pipelines and into your
home come from?" You will almost certainly
get a response referencing geologic natural
gas that came from the ground. But, if you
ask the same question to North American

natural gas professionals, responses may vary. This is because our natural
gas pipelines are increasingly blending in natural gas derived from biobased, sustainable sources - Renewable Natural Gas (also commonly
referred to as "RNG" or "biomethane").

While some natural gas pipelines run by large
utilities have received RNG for decades, a number of
pipelines are for the first time exploring how to make
these interconnections feasible.
RNG is derived from biogas that emits during the
decomposition of organics in our waste streams. Instead
of being flared into our air or combusted on-site for
electricity generation, biogas from U.S. municipal solid
waste, landfill, and wastewater treatment facilities, and
from large farms, is being upgraded to pipeline quality
standards and blended into our natural gas supply.
Thus, RNG makes a resource from a multiple of our
waste streams, putting waste to productive use rather
than wasting it.
Biogas from organic waste decomposition in these
locations is made up primarily of methane (50 percent
or often more), mixed with carbon dioxide (CO2) and
hydrocarbons. Using various conditioning processes
and technologies - including amine absorption,
