Potomac Memo - September/October 2013 - (Page 15)

feature Full Circle Certification By Shannon Nelligan, CMP Founder & Event Consultant, Strategic Event Consulting, LLC Co-Chair, Publications Committee This past June, I attended the CMP Conclave in Spokane as a representative of the Potomac Chapter of Meeting Professionals International. As a recent graduate of the PMPI CMP University and an active member of the Education Committee, I was thrilled to attend this meeting of the CMP minds. This experience allows me to bring my gained knowledge back to our chapter, especially to help guide future CMPs through the application and the exam process. I know that without PMPI’s CMP University, I wouldn’t have been able to attain my goal of becoming a Certified Meeting Professional. All of my expectations were more than met beginning on the first day, as I joined Exam Development, a half-day session established for current CMPs to write questions for future CMP exams. I entered a room filled with event professionals from multiple countries and every career path in the events industry. One common thread tied us together: our desire to grow and develop our industry through the CMP certification. We worked together by reviewing the latest draft of the new CIC Manual and writing sample questions for future certification tests. This exercise was an intense process that required brainstorming, reviewing and rewriting of sample questions with other event professionals. All participants applied themselves fully to this task. It has been rewarding to participate in every aspect of the CMP process, from putting together my application to now helping with the development of the exam. I can share this complete knowledge with our local chapter as I continue to work on future PMPI CMP University Programs. Helping develop an upcoming CMP Exam was just one of many experiences that I was able to participate in as an attendee at the CMP Conclave that I have been able to bring back to the chapter. Again, PMPI has given me an opportunity to grow, and now I have even more tools to give back to our event professional community.
