the Future of Paper
Sappi Europe is continuously and successfully investing in
numerous projects to adapt to a changing consumer landscape.
CEO, Sappi Europe:
"If you are going to
survive in this world,
you need to invest."
Sappi Europe has been right at the
sharp end of the industry, the one that most
of us hear all the stories of woe about - the
decline in the graphics market, the terrible
impact of the iPad, the downward spiral that
seems to have no end.
So it may be somewhat surprising to
learn that Berry Wiersum, CEO of Sappi's
European operations, instead of being browbeaten and stressed about sales of graphic
papers, is actually bullish about the market
"We are having a remarkably good time
of it at the moment," Wiersum says. "In fact,
the tail end of 2015 saw full order books
across the board for graphic paper producers, and going into this year, our machines
are still full."
There has been an undoubted decline in
the graphics paper market over the last few
years in Europe, with estimates ranging up
to 10 percent a year. Yet with the economy
improving, along with the saturation of tablets and iPads among consumers, might we
be seeing a bottoming out of the decline?
"There are a number of factors that
are going our way," comments Wiersum.
"The economy is one; we have seen an
improvement there, as well as a number of
positive moves that mean more money in
the consumer's pocket, which benefits us all
around. Then there are tax rebates in certain
countries like Holland, added to the reduction in energy prices, which again means
more money in consumers' pockets. All this
helps drive demand.
