TRENDSPOTTING AWARDS 2013 WINNERS The TAPPI/PIMA Award GLENN OSTLE Each year during its annual PaperCon conference, TAPPI/PIMA present awards to individuals who have contributed greatly to the knowledge and progress of the pulp and paper industry, ranging from student scholarship winners to Executive of the Year. While their accomplishments could fill volumes, here we present brief descriptions of the 2013 award winners who, through their performance and commitment, have raised the bar within our industry. 2013 PIMA Executive of the Year Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Award BOB VYSE, RETIRED FROM HONEYWELL GEORGE F. MARTIN, NEWPAGE George F. Martin has 29 years of leadership and operations experience in the paper industry and has been President and CEO for NewPage since 2010, providing direction and leadership to the company, and more recently for its successful emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Over the past decade, he has been an instrumental leader throughout company’s mergers and acquisitions as well as in the establishment of NewPage Corporation in 2005. Mr. Martin joined Westvaco in 1983 and later held key operating, technical and staff roles, becoming director of integration for MeadWestvaco Papers Group. In 2003, he was named vice president and mill manager for operations in Escanaba, Mich., and in 2005 was promoted to Senior Vice President of Operations for NewPage where he was responsible for: manufacturing operations of 10 mills; Strategic Sourcing and Logistics; Environmental, Health and Safety; Order Management; and Maintenance and Engineering. He holds board positions at the American Forest and Paper Association and the National Association of Manufacturers. 8 Paper360º MAY/JUNE 2013 Robert (Bob) Vyse has contributed significantly to the development and application of CMC technology, in particular in the combined application of steam and induction energy devices in advanced fi nishing technology. Vyse began his career with MacMillan Bloedel and Powell River, followed by 10 years as Vice President and projects manager of Omni Continental Ltd. He then joined Devron Engineering (which subsequently became Honeywell), where he was Director of R&D and Process Control for over 20 years before retiring in 2008. An active member of TAPPI and PAPTAC, he has authored numerous papers on papermaking technology, in particular on CD weight, coat weight, moisture and caliper control. He also lectured at UBC, TAPPI pressing and drying courses and PAPTAC papermaking technology courses, and in 2010 he won the TAPPI Process Control Division Award.
