Source: FisherSOLVE™. © 2014 Fisher International, Inc. 18 Paper360º JULY/AUGUST 2014 In early 2012, Fisher International gathered information from 82 pulp and paper mills representing all global regions, mill types, grades and sizes, and published the results in The 2012 Global PPI Water Benchmark Report. Responses showed that water has become an important strategic issue, and that many mills-particularly in developing countries-expect that their access to water will be threatened in the next five years and they will need to make changes to their water usage goals. The charts have been updated since the study was published in 2012, to better reflect current data from the FisherSolve™ Mill Asset Database. Some of the findings are reported here. wateR uSaGe aNd SludGe dISpoSal Worldwide, the range of water usage per ton of paper produced was found to be quite broad: from under .95 cubic meters per metric ton (240 gallons per short ton) of paper produced up to 292 cubic meters per metric ton (70,000 gallons per short ton) of paper produced (Figure 1). The majority of respondent mills use less than 6,000 gallons per short ton of paper produced (25 cubic meters per metric ton of paper produced). The bodies of water used for discharge of water, varies between regions. Rivers and lakes represent the majority in all regions (except Africa and the Middle East), and municipalities handle between 11% and 50% of respondents' water effluent (Figure 2). Sludge production among respondents ranges from almost nothing to just over .4 tons of sludge per ton of pulp or paper produced. Eighty percent of respondents produce less than 7 tons sludge per produced ton of pulp or paper. Ninety-two percent of respondents produce less than .2 tons sludge per produced ton. Fisher intends a more detailed study of sludge production per ton of each type of fiber and paper produced (Figure 3).
