the bottom line | GLOBAL OUTREACH Kemira Expands its Global Business and Humanitarian Reach Recent acquisitions, partnerships and humanitarian efforts have focused international attention on the global chemicals company. GLENN OSTLE Jari Rosendal, Kemira president and CEO As part of the acquisition of AkzoNobel's paper chemicals business, approximately 350 employees will be transferred to Kemira, as well as six production sites, including this one in Gunsan, South Korea. Kemira, the global chemicals company serving customers in water-intensive industries, has recently taken some major steps to expand its presence in pulp and paper, as well as to demonstrate its commitment to humanitarian efforts. EXPANDED GLOBAL REACH In May, 2015, Kemira completed the previously announced acquisition of the AkzoNobel paper chemicals business for EUR 153 million. As a result, approximately 350 employees will be transferred to Kemira as well as six production sites located in South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Spain and Italy. The integration period of the transaction is expected to last about two years, during which time Kemira will increase the production capacity of its own paper chemical 26 Paper360º JULY/AUGUST 2015 manufacturing sites in order to realize expected production synergies. Eventually, the acquired business is expected to increase Kemira's revenue by more than EUR 200 million on an annualized basis. This latest acquisition is a significant part of the fulfillment of Kemira's strategic objective to be the number one supplier to the pulp and paper industry globally. In addition to the assets acquired, Kemira gains new products, know-how and application technologies that broaden its portfolio, especially in the key areas of paper machine retention and strength enhancement. "This acquisition strengthens our market position, especially in the growing APAC region," said Jari Rosendal, Kemira's president and CEO. "It also enables substantial efficiency improvements in our global paper chemicals manufacturing network. Most importantly, we gain new competencies and technological capabilities, extending our ability to deliver best in business expertise and services to our global customers." PARTNERING WITH GE In late 2014, Kemira's Paper Segment finalized the agreement whereby Kemira became the preferred distributor of General Electric (GE) boiler and cooling water chemical technologies to the global pulp and paper industry. In the past, Kemira provided a wide array of functional and process chemistries, but lacked products for boiler and cooling technology. During the same time, GE recognized their need for a channel to market in the pulp and paper industry. "It made sense to come together," says Joe Stockman, vice president of sales and
