intouch | ASSOCIATION NEWS Young Professionals "Top 20 Under 30" Winners For the remainder of 2015, each Association News article in Paper360˚ will feature five winners from the Young Professionals "Top 20 Under 30" contest; individuals under the age of 30 who, through their achievements, are emerging as leaders in the pulp, paper, packaging, tissue and related industries. Congratulations to this second group of young winners. Sarah Dawkins (25) Chemical Process Design Group, O'Neil Anderson, SC As a consulting design engineer, Dawkins has the opportunity to work on a variety of different paper mill projects and studies ranging from equipment upgrades to building new machines. "The future of this industry depends on the ability of companies to adapt and change with the needs of society," says Dawkins. Eric Hanington (28) Chemical Additives/ Core-Link Area Process Manager, International Paper Blythewood, SC At IP's Courtland, AL., mill, Hanington helped develop the grade on PM30. At the Eastover, SC., mill he worked on the conversion from AP Starch to Enzyme Converted Starch Cookers and installed two Fulfill (swollen starch) skids on the #1 and #2 paper machines. "I believe the pulp and paper industry will continue to have a significant role in global manufacturing," says Hanington. Erin Jordan (27) MB Applications Specialist, Solenis Moorseville, NC Jordan has participated in field implementation of a faster test for spore detection in liquid packaging board as well as developing and implementing solutions to MB issues in paper processes such as machine deposition, stock preservation, odor complaints and sheet defects. "Companies will need to find ways to attract young people to an industry that is not necessarily viewed as cutting-edge by college graduates and young engineers," says Jordan. Melissa Kuo (27) Process Engineer, Clearwater Paper Corp. Clarkston, WA Since joining Clearwater, Kuo has made multiple contributions to meeting the 2017 corporate sustainability goals. She led a water reduction Kaizen that resulted in saving more than 500,000 gallons per day of water without a major expenditure; completed a liquor loop mass balance to identify and reduce chloride content; and was a significant part of a team dedicated to BOD reduction around a major mill outage. "I see the industry becoming more globally integrated and sustainability improvements becoming standard operating practices," says Kuo. Stephen Moses (26) Pulp Supervisor, Domtar Ashdown, AR Moses worked with a representative from Andritz on the Domtar Fiberline Assessment, which entailed traveling to all Domtar mills and rating each facility on several management systems, allowing the mills to learn from each other. He also collected data for key quality variables and looked for trends that could help each mill optimize their operating conditions. Results were presented at the annual Domtar Fiberline Managers meeting. "The industry as a whole needs to change from a paper mindset to a fiber mindset," says Moses. TAPPI's Young Professionals Division is composed of members who are college undergraduates, recent graduates and personnel new to the industry. It provides a wide range of products, services and educational opportunities, as well as a means for experiencing different professional areas, resources for career advancement and the chance to network with peers and industry professionals. For more information about the YP Division, contact Libby Settle at On the Bookshelf Corrugating Defect/Remedy Manual, Sixth Edition Edited by James T. Carbone This manual provides a basis for common knowledge of terms, definitions and methods of correction of corrugated operational defects. It illustrates and provides causes and remedies for hundreds of defects affecting corrugated boxes. The manual is divided into four parts: corrugated problems; printing problems; die cutting problems; and finishing and manufacturers' joint problems. It is also available on a full-color, searchable CD. Product code: 0101R153 Member Price: $87.00 Paper360º JULY/AUGUST 2015 31
