Bringing Customers and Suppliers Face-to-Face
The way suppliers interact with their customers has changed. A lot of
R&D has moved from manufacturers to the suppliers, mergers and acquisitions have
reduced the supplier customer base, and declining markets for traditional paper
grades have resulted in machine conversions and the introduction of new grades.
These factors, combined with the growing use of electronic media, have reduced
traditional face-to-face interactions between suppliers and customers, and thus the
opportunity to discuss how they can work together more effectively.
To help resolve this, ASPI brings together customers and suppliers in two meetings each year.
At the Spring Meeting, paper company executives and mill managers speak about
their strategic issues and how suppliers can best meet their needs. With the networking time at the meetings, attendees have the opportunity to meet these executives
and learn more about mill-specific and larger company needs.
In 2007, ASPI launched its unique Customer Alignment Meetings at which major
pulp and paper manufacturers host a large group of suppliers in order to present their strategic goals and supplier expectations. In 2014,
International Paper was the seventh company to host a Customer Alignment Meeting, and in 2015 the meeting will be at Georgia-Pacific in
Atlanta. Previous hosts included: Boise (2013), Domtar (2012), Temple-Inland (2011), Verso (2010), NewPage (2009) and MWV (2008).
