On March 28, 2014, the
College of Education at
Michigan State University
hosted a conference entitled
"Re-envisioning Assessment,
Accountability, and Data Use
to Support Schools" with
Dr. Rick Stiggins, an expert in formative
assessment, as the keynote speaker. Panelists
and attendees included stakeholders across
the education sector in Michigan, including

administrators, officials from the Michigan
Department of Education, researchers,
teachers, administrators, journalists,
and nonprofit organization associates.
While there was constructive debate and
conversation across issues such as teacher
evaluation, teacher preparation, and parent
and public use of data, a particular panel
of educators and administrators from Holt
(MI) Junior High School gave attendees
an inside look at how formative assessment
