Questions & Answers Leveling Student Council Campaigns Q This is my second year as a middle level adviser, and to prepare for our spring elections at the end of next month, I'm looking for ideas and strategies that we can introduce to tighten up the process. Elections here have usually run smoothly, but because we're working with younger students, I want to make our election activities more appropriate for their age group. This includes strategies for leveling the financial playing field so that cost won't deter any student who wants to run for office. A To observe students truly involved in our democratic process, one needs to look no further than campaign week for student council elections. With planning and clear guidelines in place, middle level student campaigns will reflect the highest forms of political ethics. A primary goal for student elections is for candidates to run positive campaigns focusing on their own strengths, commitment, and abilities rather than devaluing or being critical of their opponents. The quality of campaigns rests in the hands of the student councils, advisers, and their abilities to establish and enforce clear expectations and campaign rules. february 2015 5
