Activities Exchange Week Every year, the student council at Fort Zumwalt East High School in Saint Peters, MO, puts on Be the Change Week, a week where they highlight the values of unity and acceptance, focusing on disabled students and those who are often left out of school activities. This is both a spirit week and an education event featuring different activities each day, and council members come up with new activities each year. For example, every day during Be the Change Week might feature a new quote or inspirational sayings about supporting and accepting others: On Monday, students will wear boots to "boot out" bullying; on Tuesday, students will make "stereotype shirts" with labels that have been applied or rumors that have been spread about them written on the front and the truth about each item written on the back. Other activities include handing out "I support you!" stickers, high-five chains that run throughout the school, and videos or discussions about the effects of bullying and harassment. It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop. -Confucius 28 leadership for student activities Chemo-Care Bags The National Honor Society chapter at South River High School in Gambrills, MD, tries to make the lives of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy a little easier by making care bags and delivering them to local chemotherapy treatment centers and hospitals. The bags include everyday items that may help with the symptoms brought on by chemotherapy or the long, boring hours in treatment rooms. NHS members volunteer to bring in items like blankets and socks to help stave off chemotherapy-induced cold sensitivity; reusable water bottles, water flavor packets, and candy; notebooks, puzzle books, and pens to help deal with the boredom of long treatments; daily comfort items like back scratchers, lip balm, lotion, and tissues; and encouraging letters and handmade cards. Chapter members get together to make somewhere between 30 and 50 bags while a guest speaker gives a talk about the experience of having cancer. NHS members then deliver the care bags to the chemo center. One-on-One Tutoring National Honor Society students at John P. Stevens High School in Edison, NJ, provide one-on-one tutoring for students of all grade levels and in all subjects. Students share their strengths, weaknesses, languages spoken, and availability with the guidance department to be matched up with students in need of assistance. Students provide tutoring services before school, after school, in the school library, and even during personal study hall time.
