Scholarships & Awards 2014 Earl Reum Award Winner Doug Erickson C ongratulations to veteran adviser Doug Erickson for winning the 2014 Earl Reum Award for outstanding service to activities advisers. Erickson received his award at the annual meeting of the National Association of Workshop Directors (www.nawd.org) held in Phoenix last December. Erickson is no stranger to NASC, NHS, and NJHS. For the last three years, he's served as the state director of the Minnesota Association of Student Councils and the Minnesota Association of Honor Societies. He has worked as the student council adviser at Orono High School in the west-metro area of Minneapolis, MN, for many years, introducing a leadership class to the school and actively participating in state and national conferences and workshops. The Reum Award recognizes individuals who have become excellent teachers of teachers by training activity advisers at workshops and conferences in the skills and values they need to be effective. Erickson's work has taken him to many states for both training and keynote addresses on the importance of student activities. He has been a regular contributor as a presenter at both the LEAD and NASC National Conferences. At Orono, Erickson's role as activities director introduced not only the leadership class for credit to his students, but he also brought in the Link Crew organization for his students and other schools in the state. He regularly presents at state conferences in Minnesota, along with teaching at the state's Summer Leadership Academy. Nationally, Erickson's work earned him a regional award as the NASC Adviser of the Year (the Warren E. Shull Award) and he served as the adult co-chair of the NASC National Advisory Council in 2011-2012. He has been recognized twice as his school's Teacher of the Year, along with receiving a community-based Person of the Year award for his dedication to the development of student leadership in his district. This award is named for Dr. Earl Reum, whose outstanding contributions as a writer and speaker helped build the field of student leadership development starting in the 1950s until his death in 2010.
