Our student council is very active, hosting
at least one project or activity each month
and sometimes two or three simultaneously. In
the past, projects have usually been short-term
and more traditional, at least for what people
think of as student council activities. This
year, however, our council members were
motivated to do a different kind of service
project: a month-long campaign to raise funds
for a local charity. In our planning meeting,
we've discussed the fact that a lengthy project
needs to be tackled differently in terms of
how students approach promotions, and
we are looking for advice. What should my
students be considering as they outline their
promotion ideas?

When projects stretch over long periods, they can
sometimes be more akin to campaigns, which, as the
adviser mentions above, may require different promotional
approaches. Additionally, councils will need to build
awareness of the cause or purpose of the project. It's
important for the school and community to understand what
the project is supporting as much as it is for them to know
