Activities Exchange
A Day
The NJHS chapter at Winston Park K-8 Center in
Miami, FL, wanted to make a difference in the lives of
homeless children by building a partnership through service
and leadership. Chapter members researched the needs of
different homeless residential children in the community
and decided to hold a day of fun at Camillus House, a
local shelter. Activities included coloring and decorating
paper plates, the creation of custom hair bows for the girls,
gingerbread man decorations for the boys, and a mini
bulletin board. At the end of the arts and crafts project, the
chapter hosted outdoor games and singing.
At Camillus House, the arts and craft section was
organized in booths to represent each activity. The children
rotated from booth to booth along with NJHS chapter
members to complete their creation. NJHS members and
residents of Camillus House placed their handprints on the
edges of the mini billboard to highlight their newfound
team spirit. Outdoor games included sack, balloon, and
shaving-cream races, organized into teams. The first team to
complete the races received prizes.
NJHS chapter members accomplished their goal to give
children at Camillus House an opportunity to experience
a fun-filled day, as evidenced by the completed projects
and the observed participation, laughter, excitement, and
enjoyment that the children expressed. The NJHS members
learned about respect, organization, the importance of
supporting each other, and the importance of compassion.
All for
Books
Campaign
For the past three years, the NJHS chapter of Gorzycki
Middle School in Austin, TX, has been participating in
the Scholastic All for Books fundraising campaign. All for
Books is a multifaceted fundraiser wherein collected funds
are used to purchase books at Gorzycki's campus book fair
for the Dell Children's Hospital Library. That purchase, in
turn, supports the campus book fair and ultimately provides
Gorzycki students with new library resources. In addition to
supporting the children at Dell and the students at Gorzycki,
Scholastic donates one book to the Kids in Distress charity
organization for every dollar raised.
Gorzycki's NJHS chapter members select an All for
Books committee at the beginning of the year, and its
primary goal is to raise funds for this campaign. Prior to
the book fair, All for Books committee members create a
short video promoting the campaign and notify Gorzycki's
campus Google group of the upcoming fundraiser. During
the week of the campus Scholastic Book Fair, All for Books
committee members collect monetary donations (in
exchange for a donation card that will be hung in the school
library) to purchase books on the last day of the fair. These
books are then donated to the library at Dell Children's
Hospital. This event is a quick and fun way for members to
give back to the community. For project information, visit

Bring Your Own Banana
The student council at Centennial High School in Peoria, AZ, hosts BYOB (Bring Your
Own Banana) day, creating a fun and tasty social event for the student body. The student
council advertises the event for a full week prior to the event, encouraging students to bring
a banana to lunch on Friday-but they don't explain why. On Friday, students arrive at lunch
to discover ice cream sundae stations set up around the lunchroom. Stations are free for any
student with a banana. The student council also has bananas available for $1 for any student
who didn't bring one. Student council plays music to encourage a fun atmosphere, and
students love socializing while building their own personalized banana splits.
