Building Your
Advisership
Q
I am a new adviser in a middle school,
taking over for a previous adviser who left
the school at the beginning of March. The exit
was sudden, and I did not have an opportunity
to meet with the adviser before she left to
discuss what my role and responsibilities would
be with the council. My principal has articulated
his support for me, but he has not been able
to clearly describe my position. What is the
function of a middle school council, and what
should I as the adviser do beyond helping the
kids plan their projects?
A
Starting a school year as a new adviser is difficult enough.
When thrust into the role late in the year, the new adviser
inherits a council already well into its activities with established
routines. As such, it's vital for the adviser to become familiar
with any project or activity currently underway and to meet with
the officers to review the council calendar for the remainder of
the year. With the last two months of school upon you, it's highly
probable that there are elections to be planned and scheduled.
Late in the school year is not the time to make drastic changes in
council routines or calendars; but at the same time, a very busy
council can be overwhelming, and it may be necessary to trim or
delay an activity or two to make the new role manageable.
