Lessons for Leaders Leadership Styles in the Digital Age N I CK FO R TU NA I n many ways, social media has leveled the playing field, creating a platform where anyone-not only the most rich or powerful-can have a voice. While there is no "correct" leadership style, top-down, hierarchal structures (know as vertical) are being pushed aside in favor of collective, shared forms of leadership (known as horizontal). In this new environment it is important that student leaders learn to embrace a leadership style that facilitates communication, engagement, integration, and teamwork. Objective Help student leaders brainstorm horizontal/shared leadership styles. Materials Notecards Large sheets of paper Time Required One class period Procedure 1. Host a class discussion about horizontal and shared leadership styles, using flow charts to illustrate each example. 2. Prepare one notecard per student or group, depending on class size. On each card, write an example of a scenario in which leadership is needed. Examples include: * In an attempt to attract more customers, a restaurant owner wants to create a menu that changes slightly each week. How does he come up with the menu each week? * A new manager is hired to oversee a small IT business. She decides to implement a dress code to increase professionalism. 26 leadership for student activities How does she determine what employees should wear? * The coach of a sports team wants to host a fundraising event to support a local charity. How does he come up with a fundraising activity? 3. Break students into groups and have them select a solution using a vertical leadership style. Based on the earlier class discussion, how would leader approach the problem using a vertical leadership style? Have students record their ideas on large sheets of paper, then tape them to the wall and share their approaches with the class. 4. Have students regroup and create a horizontal leadership solution to the same problem. Based on the earlier class discussion, how would a leader approach the problem using a horizontal leadership style? Have students record their ideas on large sheets of paper, tape them to the wall next to the vertical examples, and share their approaches with the class. Discussion For each scenario, have the class comment on the following: * Which approaches would they prefer as employees? * Which approaches would they prefer as leaders? * Which approaches are most effective? * What ways can leaders implement the best of both approaches?
