Take Note Planning for Future Leadership Roles Whether you begin planning now, later this summer, or wait until fall, planning ahead with the new student leaders who will be working with you and the chapter is an important annual activity. Helping your officers learn their duties, establishing chapter goals, and mapping out a year-long calendar of projects and events are all supportive efforts that teach your students valuable leadership skills. When time permits, we hope you will also take time to look ahead, whether one year or five years down the road, to develop strategies for sustaining the good work and leadership development for your chapter. We trust that some of the ideas explored in this month's edition will assist you in the process. THE POWER OF ONE Join chapters from around the nation in celebrating student leaders during National Student Leadership Week, April 19-25. This year's theme is "The Power of One." Since 1972, the National Association of Secondary School Principals has promoted this week to bring attention to the many contributions made to schools and communities by caring and competent student leaders. You can find a wide range of resources online at www.nhs.us/nslw and www.njhs.us/nslw to supplement the insert that appeared in the February issue of this magazine. 8 leadership for student activities END OF THE YEAR APPRECIATION It's a good time to begin thinking about all of the people you want to thank for their support at the end of the school year. Consider the following as a starting point for your list: 1. Co-advisers 2. Chapter officers 3. Cooks, custodians, and other school support staff 4. Committee chairpersons 5. Community contacts for your chapter service projects 6. Members of the faculty council 7. Parent volunteers 8. School administrators 9. School counselors 10. Teacher volunteers/supporters Your list may prove to be much longer than this, but in order to prepare for all of these thank yous-even just a simple hand-written note or email-now is a good time to start planning. ANNUAL SURVEY The National Survey of Honor Society Advisers will be posted online on April 15. Please take time between April 15 and June 30 to respond to this year's survey. All respondents will receive a coupon for 20 percent off orders from the online stores, and two lucky advisers-one NHS and one NJHS-will receive a free candelabra set.
