This has been a very
successful and event-filled
year for our student council.
Our council members have
been committed to meeting
their council responsibilities,
and many went the extra mile
to see that projects and events
were successful. I would like to
have the council participate in
an evaluation exercise during
one of our last meetings.
I know how I want to run the
exercise, but am in need of
evaluative content questions
to use.
A
Evaluation is an important part of any planning process. Many people
think of evaluation as simply pointing to the success or failure of a
program. If conducted properly, an evaluation can do much more than
merely answer "what happened?" Used as an ongoing process, it can help
determine the strengths and weaknesses of a program or group and focus
attention on needed improvements. The progress of the group is measured
by the changes and growth that have taken place in the actions, skills,
and knowledge of members. In addition to evaluating individual council
activities and events, it is important that councils look back in a broader way
at their years and use the results to make improvements and direct planning
for the coming year.
Creating an evaluation instrument begins with identifying the activities
and aspects of the student council for which you would like to have feedback,
determining how to collect and synthesize it, and then deciding how to report
and use the findings. The sample questions on the following page can be used
by advisers as models for building evaluation questions and topics.
