Lessons for Leaders
Determining What Works-and
What Doesn't-in Leadership
CH R I STI N E CUSATI S
Objective
■ Students will compare the qualities
of a poorly functioning leadership
structure to an ideally functioning
leadership structure.
Materials
■ Large pieces of paper
■ Markers
Time Required
■ One class period
Procedure
1. Break students into small groups and
provide each group with two large
pieces of paper and a marker.
2. Ask the groups to envision an
organization governed by failing

leadership for student activities
leadership. The group could be a
company, nonprofit organization,
or charity. Briefly consider
demographics such as the number
of employees, the industry type,
and products/services offered. Then
have students assign hypothetical
problems to their company
(examples could include high
turnover, unmotivated employees,
financial loss, etc.). How did these
problems occur? What leadership
characteristics could have caused
them? Have students create a
diagram containing this information
on the first sheet of paper.
3. Retaining the demographics of the
first organization, ask the groups
to diagram the successes that are
opposite of the problems encountered
with the first group (examples
could include low turnover, engaged
employees, financial success, etc.).
Then have them identify leadership
characteristics that are opposite of
the characteristics that caused the
problems in the first example.
4. Follow with presentations of findings,
then lead a class discussion based on
the following questions:
■ hich characteristics were
W
essential to ideally functioning
leadership?
■ hich characteristics were
W
detrimental to the organization?
■ ow can a poorly functioning
H
leadership group begin to turn
things around?
