Leadership for Student Activities - May 2015, NHS & NJHS Edition - (Page 4)

Editor's Note Structural Strength E very successful leadership group is supported by a strong structure. And in many cases, the most effective structures are created by advisers who can relinquish a certain amount of control. As student council adviser Joseph Kaelin says in our cover story on page 12, "It is not an adviser's job to organize. It is not an adviser's job to do students' work for them. Give students the tools they need and let them do it." Those tools are the focus of our feature stories. On page 16, we consider how advisers can empower students to continue volunteer efforts during the summer using a wealth of resources. We follow this discussion with a review of websites that help student groups identify health needs in their community. Elsewhere in this issue we provide activity ideas (page 28) and a lesson plan on identifying the qualities of an ideally functioning leadership structure (page 26). As you reflect on this school year and begin planning for the next, we hope this issue of Leadership for Student Activities serves as your guide.
