THE DOS AND DON'TS

OF DESIGNING YOUR
COMMUNICATIONS
CENTER ON A BUDGET
By Joanna Pease

h, that word ... budget. It strikes fear into
the hearts of managers everywhere,
increasing pulses, stress levels and
sometimes emotional eating (hey, I
don't judge!). We all have budgets - the trick is
sticking to one while getting everything you want.
One of the biggest budget busters can be doing
your center over, so to avoid this, be prepared for
legwork! Here are some tips to get you started.

DO plan ahead. This is the number-one "do" in my
book. When it comes to your communications center,
a remodel should last at least 20 years without a
major overhaul, so planning ahead for what you'll
need long term is essential.
I recently met with a director who is about three
years away from a remodel but was looking for ideas -
this is perfect! A great time to start planning is two to three
years before you want to move in or remodel your old center.
There are several pieces of information that you will want to
start gathering early. Before you even start to put together
costs, think about what the remodel will actually entail.
You may be surprised at how many items are on your list
of wants and needs when you begin to put it together.
First of all, start looking at how many positions you will
need to cover the call volume. Often centers start taking on
other PSAPs with a large remodel or new center. Will this
be the case for you? And if so, how much will those towns or
departments be paying to use your services? Keep in mind that
even though this will be a few years down the road, it will increase
your operating budget and your needs.
Once you get an idea of positions, it will be time to talk space.
Whether you are going with a new space or remodeling, talk to
