HELP YOUR PSAP FIGHT BACK

as this happened to you? One person comes to work sick
in your 9-1-1 center and then everyone is sick - sneezing,
coughing, watery eyes everywhere. You feel like your center
is rapidly becoming an advertisement for a cold and allergy
medicine. What's worse is that by the time the bug goes through the whole
team, it starts over again! A never-ending cycle of sickness. Since your center
is operating 24/7, there is never a chance to truly clean or properly disinfect.
Let's face it: Your center is a petri dish of bacteria and viruses.

Fortunately, the PSAP wellness marketplace has advanced over the years. Technology
is constantly evolving, and there is a greater
awareness of the importance of maintaining
equipment and increasing productivity with
ergonomics and a healthier environment. The
industry has made great strides in looking out
for the overall health of telecommunicator
teams by incorporating exercise and promoting a healthier lifestyle; however, what about
the physical space everyone is working in?
In general office buildings, janitorial crews
come in after hours to thoroughly clean the
space. But there are no "after hours" in PSAP.
So, what happens?

Most centers have a janitorial staff that
will clean around the consoles but rarely
in, on and underneath them. Removing the
debris, food, candy, dust, dust mites and
allergens from the telecommunicators' primary work environment is often completely
overlooked. You don't want your janitorial
team working in or around the expensive
technology you work with every day, but
telecommunicators and technicians don't
have the time to take care of it, nor is it part
of their job descriptions.
But left unaddressed, these cleanliness
issues will eventually add up to problems with
computer maintenance, console furniture

operability, and the overall aesthetics of the
furniture and room space, and have negative mood and health effects on the telecommunicators. They also add unexpected and
potentially substantial costs to your budget
for major repair, replacement and absences
due to illness.
You've been as proactive as you can be,
right? You've put up sanitizing stations,
purchased tons of wipes, promoted hand
washing, and banned food and open drink
containers near the console furniture. Has it
helped? Let's review these one by one:
SANITIZING STATIONS

These usually come on standing poles,
wall mounts or desk units that contain hand
sanitizing gel. Sometimes it's just a jug of
hand sanitizer left on every desk. It is recommended that hand sanitizers have 60 percent
alcohol content to really disinfect. This is
great for killing germs, but not so good on
skin, good bacteria or surfaces.
First, those gels can be very drying to the
skin. Second, hand sanitizer does not differentiate the good bacteria from the bad - it
