to operate - make sure this is a performance
spec. The function is the most important
piece for a dispatch center. Often if a bid goes
to purchasing, the least expensive bidder will
win. Scotch tape is cheaper than duct tape
- it doesn't mean it holds as well. Looking
at ways to purchase the quality you want
can require some tough decisions, so stick
with the essentials first, and see what your
budget allows for in terms of "nice to have"
items later.
DO look at options, especially with items
such as floor coverings, lighting and add-ons
at the dispatch consoles, like heating and
cooling. Look for function - things that will
benefit your center and are a need. Wants can
always be added later.
DO ask if something can be added or
upgraded later. If your budget starts to get
squeezed, there are ways to get what you want
a little further down the road. Most vendors
are willing to work with you on add-ons.
Again, quality and function are key. Do not
skimp on the meat of the project because you
want the mashed potato as well.
So, you have gotten through the hard part.
Purchases have been made - just one final
push to the finish line! You believe you have
met budget, but you still need to complete
the center.

The realization of years of hard work is a finished center, on time, and more importantly,
on budget!

DO stay on schedule. Once all the purchases have been made, variables such as
shipping, installation and vendors working
together can cause any number of delays.
To stay on schedule, make sure you create
a timeline or Gantt chart for every vendor
to follow, and build in extra time if you can.
That extra cushion will ensure you will move
in on schedule - and on budget.
