Like many football stadiums and basketball arenas, Major League Baseball (MLB) fields are being updated with improved wireless infrastructure to handle demand and quality. In 2014, there were only nine stadiums that still did not have free wireless internet access. Over the past three years, MLB has been involved in a $300 million project for rolling out wireless at the ballpark. This has become an important aspect of the ballpark experience, and Bob Bowman, CEO of MLB Advanced Media, mandated all teams install Wi-Fi. This means that all teams - from the Miami Marlins to the New York Yankees - will now have Wi-Fi at peak capabilities. This call to action coincided with the release of the new MLB ballpark app. This app will complement and personalize fans' trips to the game with My Journal, social media, offers, rewards, and exclusive content. It also allows season ticket holders to have their tickets and e-cash digitally stored. MLB views this as a method to bring younger, more tech-savvy fans to the ballpark. Most professional leagues have realized the opportunity that comes with enabling wireless throughout their stadiums. This opens up the ability for free advertising because people take pictures and post comments frequently when attending a game. "Seventy-four million people walk through a Major League Baseball turnstile every year - and another 40 in the minor leagues," said Bob Bowman. "You want to know who those people are." During spring training, we saw glimpses of wireless expansion at Minor League complexes. Verizon's speed and strength were on display as hundreds of sites were activated across Florida, the spring training home for many teams. XLTE proved to boost wireless network performance for areas with concentrated amounts of people. large venues across the country.
