T H E M E: 5G: T H E N E X T G E N E R AT ION Over-The-Top International Wi-Fi Calling and Messaging By Brian Kirk VP of Business Development, NetworkIP A ccording to Harris Interactive, nearly 60 million people in the United States, or one of every four adults, makes international calls. Mobile subscribers are transitioning from purchasing calling cards or international calling products from convenience stores or online to using third-party Over-the-Top (OTT) products. By offering competitive international communications, mobile operators can seize the opportunity to build brand loyalty, reduce churn, and increase ARPU. The market trends are clear; a competitive international calling and messaging solution is needed to complete a mobile carrier's product portfolio. Providing international communications to family and friends around the globe is a proven way to attract new subscribers by providing high-value and quality calling packages subscribers will trust. With the explosion of smartphone adoption, especially in lower income ethnic markets, coupled with access to and acceptance of debit and credit cards, more subscribers are transitioning to OTT products. The key opportunity for mobile carriers is to acquire the mass-market consumers who have a need for international communications. Carriers need a simple, easy-to-use OTT solution where subscribers are able to communicate globally, while the operator receives financial compensation with little or no risk. Another important opportunity is leveraging the inherent Wi-Fi calling and messaging capabilities enabling an operator's subscribers to use the product to make calls using Wi-Fi access points. This could be at home, in a coffee shop in any country, or anywhere cellular coverage is marginal, non-existent or roaming is too expensive. Using Wi-Fi also supports network offload, reducing costs and creating more bandwidth on the operator's network. The bottom line: Adding an international Wi-Fi calling and messaging app to a mobile operator's existing portfolio of products leverages the operator's brand, adds positive ARPU, and strengthens loyalty with the masses and technology savvy consumers. By offering competitive international communications, mobile operators can seize the opportunity to build brand loyalty, reduce churn, and increase ARPU.
