CANADIAN RETAILER

| THE HUMAN RESOURCES ISSUE

GET TO KNOW JIM CALDWELL
Candid questions from Canadian Retailer elicit
candid responses from Lowes Canada's Executive
Vice President and speaker at the 2017 RCC Human
Resources Conference in April.
What makes a great leader?
A balance of passion for the business and for
people, and a belief that the customer is the reason
the company exists.
What's your favourite getaway locale?
Aruba. It's quiet and the people are amazing.
What's more important-education or experience?
A leader leverages one or the other, or both,
depending on circumstances.
What's your favourite mobile device?
I love my iPhone-I do 90 per cent of my
communication with it.
Do you shop in-store or online?
Both. Although like many Canadians, I am buying
more and more online.
Which do you prefer-fiction or non-fiction?
Fiction. I find there are always learnings from a
leadership perspective within every story.
How would you describe your management style-
hands-on or hands-off?
I'd say both. Some situations require a deep dive
hands-on approach, while others require trust that
the team will do what they need to.
What's the next big game-changer in retail?
Omnichannel. Many companies talk about it, but few
have actually achieved success with it.
