Statistics Canada's most recent report shows that retail sales declined 1.8% in December 2013 from the previous month. However, as retail consultant Ed Stragiel
points out, this is on a seasonally adjusted basis. He
suggests that as retailers are now pushing holiday sales

ever earlier, it could be that historical seasonal patterns
have shifted. On a not seasonally adjusted basis, Canadian retail sales were in fact up 2.1% in December 2013
from a year ago, which starts to paint a different picture, suggesting that 2014 is starting on an uptrend.

M-COMMERCE

ONLINE GROWTH IN U.S.

MOBILE PAYMENTS SET TO BOOM IN 2014

McMillan Doolittle recently crunched
the numbers re: U.S. retailing, and found
that the growth in online sales south
of the border is actually greater than it
might appear, particularly for some product categories.

Research conducted by Wavefront indicates that Canadians are
ready for mobile payments and will show retailers and the payments industry alike in the year to come.

$3.7 trillion - Total U.S. retail sales in 2013.
8.4% - Estimated online sales in 2013, totaling roughly $250 billion.
12% - Actual penetration for all other retail
goods if food (less than 1%) and drug (less
than 3%) are removed from equation.
25% - E-commerce penetration in the
consumer electronics category. A number
that's expected to increase to nearly 37%
over the next 5 years.
*all totals exclude automotive, tobacco and fuel, categories that sometimes get thrown into the overall retail
mix and which takes retail spend to around $5 trillion.

80% of Canadians will
be able to engage in
tap and pay, or nearfield communication
payments, by 2016.

63% of Canadians
owned smartphones
in 2013.
