Canadian Retailer - Summer 2016 - 25

Rather than folding a series of disparate cultures
into a single category, brand strategies can be developed to play to each respective culture's sense of
self, reflected in how stores look, sound and smell. And
as a result, some of that approach has even wound its
way back into more general-market settings; in the
summer of 2015, Loblaw opened a Superstore pilot
project in Missassauga, ON., with an emphasis on
labels and merchandising practices taken from their
T&T operations.
"It's important for every retailer to adapt to the
people who live around them," says Lee. "So we're
starting to see a broader, multicultural assortment in
mainstream retailers. We're seeing mainstream retailers celebrate cultural festivities more often than
they did before. Now, you can buy T&T egg rolls and
T&T Udon Noodles at your local Loblaw store. That's
a beautiful thing."
And with Canada's multicultural market poised to
continue growing, the country's grocery retailers will
be looking for every opportunity to engage those communities for years to come. Loblaw acquired Arz Fine
Grocers, a Middle Eastern grocery operation, in 2014.
In the same year, Metro's Marche Adonis brought in
revenue of more than $74 million. As for Chalo! FreshCo, Adams notes, future expansion will be determined
on a case-by-case basis.
"We're focused on making sure we get this store
right-refining it from customer feedback," Adams
says. "This is the first South Asian focused grocery
store we've opened, and the public has responded
really well. But we see a lot of potential for this brand
in markets similar to Brampton. There are quite a few
communities in Canada that have high South Asian
penetration, and I think the format would do really
well. We don't have anything concrete right away, but
we definitely anticipate being able to service those
communities in the future."
"When people first get here, they're a blank canvas
when it comes to what it means to 'be Canadian'," Lee
concludes. "T&T helps them connect to being Chinese, but they're still in the process of learning what
it means to be Canadian, eat Canadian. What do they
buy? They're not just Chinese anymore. They're Chinese Canadian. It doesn't matter what country you
came from. Every new immigrant goes through that
process to acclimatize themselves. And the smart
businesses are going to figure out how to get into the
mind-space of the new Canadian."
Tina Lee, CEO of T&T Supermarkets, will be sharing
"Insights into the Ethnic Consumer" on Day 2 of Retail
Council of Canada's STORE 2016 Conference on Wednesday, June 1. For more information about STORE
