things that might happen that we can't forecast. It's unclear when you're in the midst of change what will win,
which is why experimentation is so important. It's very
hard to predict what approach will win, but if you're
trying to experiment with a number of different formats, hopefully at some point you figure out the one
that works for you and the customers, and then you
reap the rewards of that growth over time afterwards.
CR: How much does success rely on stealing customers from other competitors?
FTD: I think there's more cross-shopping that is hap-

pening across different stores. Customers are more
sensitive to value, and a great number of them are unbundling their baskets.

CR: Are we over- or under-stored in Canada?
FTD: I will quote one of the studies that we've done for

the U.S.-we have not done a similar study for Canada,
so I can't give you a number. But in the U.S. we've said
something along the lines of online might drive somewhere between 20-30 per cent of stores to close in the
next decade, driven by the fact that a lot more customers will be getting either their groceries through clickand-collect, or online. Are we over-stored in the short
term? You can debate that until the cows come home.

CR: We're seeing stores offering more amenities
for their customers. For example, you can now
buy beer in some supermarkets in Ontario. That's
maybe one less trip shoppers have to make. How
important is this?
FTD: One thing that comes up quite a bit when we talk

to certain clients who are thinking about megatrends
is the idea of a usage sharing economy. It's unclear to
me what impact that might have specifically in Canada, but there has been some experimentation in other
countries with regards to using Uber for delivery of
certain things. There are services in the U.S. that offer to do your grocery shopping for you and deliver to
your home. There may be some of these things eventually that could migrate into Canada. It's unclear how
the disruption will happen, where the disruption will
happen and who will create the disruption. But you can
see some of this grassroots experimentation happening in other countries.
