Canadian retail icon continuously
educates to improve health and
safety measures for associates
SEARS CANADA isn’t a stranger to receiving Excellence in Retailing Awards accolades. In fact,
2013 marks the second year in a row that the
company has been recognized with an award for
its health, safety and wellness initiatives.
It’s an achievement that Ryan Fabi, the company’s associate vice president of health and
safety, is very proud of. It’s also one that he says
points to a change in its management system and
culture that’s just as important as the recognition.
“We’re always looking to implement more
programs and positive activities for the unit to
focus on health and safety. We view health and
safety as more than just a regulatory requirement,” he says. “We take this very seriously.
The implementation of our program wasn’t just
to appease the regulators, but it was the right
thing to do for our organization.”

Continued success

Sears’ “Supporting a Safety Culture—The Safe
Days Awards Program” was developed to continue building on the momentum that the company has been experiencing in its health and
safety endeavours.
With the development of the program, the
company set out to encourage all Sears units
to maintain a high level of compliance with
corporate standards; ensure that all Sears associates continue to work safely and productively in a proactive manner; reduce the need
for continuous auditing while maintaining a
high level of safety awareness; and to continuously raise the awareness of health and safety
to improve overall associate engagement.
Results of the initiative were impressive. On
the back end of increased participation by associates and senior leaders within the company
in health and safety training and conference
calls, Sears reported a 4 per cent reduction in
total injuries; a 37 per cent improvement in lost
days; and a 16 per cent improvement in health
and safety course completion rate.

• Implementation and execution of the Sears HSMS
• Producing evidence of training, Safety Talk delivery, inspections, injury
investigations, etc.
• Associate compliance through auditor observations and/or interviews
H&S TRAINING: GENERAL(15%)
• 5% for each course (H&S for Associates, Leading Respect, WHMIS) was
awarded for unit completion of 85%+ (based on Feb. 2, 2013 year-end report)
H&S TRAINING: MANAGEMENT (10%)
• Unit completion of 85%+ on each of the Management courses was awarded as
follows (based on Feb. 2, 2013 year-end report): 4% - Roles & Responsibilities,
3% - Workplace Inspections, 3% - Injury/Incident Investigations
TIF (5%)
• In order to recieve a scove of 5%, the unit must meet the Corporate CTBR
goal of a 10% reduction
• There were numerous measures of the success of the program, but two
direct associate evaluations were: CTBR—Heath & Safety rating (every
associate), 2012 Awards Program ranking: Gold, Silver, Bronze recognition

Collaboration and participation

Fabi says that the success Sears is experiencing is the result
of collaboration between business channels. He says that the
fact operations, marketing, finance and other departments are
aware of the requirements shows that the whole program is becoming imbedded in Sears as a whole.
“When I speak to senior leadership I can see that the understanding and awareness of everyone concerning the health and
safety requirements of our program has improved immeasurably,” he says.
With this kind of success, what does Sears do now? Aim for continuous improvement through continuous education, says Fabi.
“It’s absolutely necessary to educate people on work-life balance
and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle at work and away from
work. It adds to the environment that you work in. At Sears we want
you to come to work and do your best, but we want you to leave at
the end of the day knowing that we did everything we could for you.
Engagement is one piece and health and safety is part of that.”
