The challenge for Canadian apparel providers

Building a loyalty base

Jim Sinegal, co-founder and former CEO,
Costco Wholesale, appeared onstage with
Costco Canada president, Louise Wendling,
to speak to conference attendees about the
history of the company and how it has managed to cultivate such a strong and loyal
customer-base. Sinegal put the success of the
company down to a few simple elements: a
strong and exciting assortment of merchandise combined with cost-saving prices for
the customer, supported by a healthy and
cohesive organization and culture. This, he
says, has resulted in Costco being the second
largest retailer in the U.S. and the fourth largest retailer in the world.

Canadian retailers face challenges due to an everchanging retail landscape. Apparel providers in this
country, however, face a whole different set of challenges.
Randy Harris, president of Trendex, North America—an
apparel marketing information and consulting company—presented research and statistics that help identify trends and their potential impacts on the sector. The
research explores trends such as the increasing foreign
retail presence in Canada, the declining importance of
second tire malls, the increasing importance of sporting
goods retailers, an aging population, the increasing importance of dollar stores and the impressive revitalization and growth of private label lines. To deal with the
pressures that these trends place on apparel providers,
Harris suggests that they personalize and customize
their offering for today's consumer to resonate with them
on a deeper level. This, according to Harris, involves an
expansion of e-commerce and m-commerce optimization, providing a highly personalized experience across
all channels and increased social media marketing initiatives with unique and compelling messages.

The future of retail pharmacy

Shoppers Drug Mart is one of the brands
most synonymous with Canadian culture.
For more than 50 years the company has
served Canadians from coast to coast.
Domenic Pilla, president and CEO of Shoppers Drug Mart Corp., spoke about the
changing environment for retail pharmacists and the trends and external factors that
are presenting challenges and opportunities
to players within the sector. He explained
that by improving its product and service
offering, while holding true to its value
proposition of health, beauty and convenience, Shoppers has been able to retain and
strengthen existing customer relationships
while building new relationships. Concentration on expanding front of store offerings
and merchandising while maintaining its
commitment to the health and well-being of
its customers has enabled Shoppers to embrace change and continue to grow.

A thousand ways to say hello

As change continues to wash over the retail landscape,
many retail strategies are becoming antiquated, even
obsolete. Tony Chapman, founder and CEO of Capital C,
spoke to delegates about this change and what it means
to their businesses, admonishing them that “it’s not what
happens to you, it’s what you do about it”. And, in light of
the fact that today’s consumer is hungry for information
and content, Chapman suggests that the opportunities for
retailers, whether large or small, global or local, is in creating compelling and arresting narrative that connects
and engages the consumer. To do this, retailers should
go beyond narrative that speaks to product features and
benefits and instead focus on the lifestyle of the customer
and build narrative around their interests and the things
that are going to resonate with them on a personal level,
bringing marketing and brand to a different level.
