Highlights of Store 2014 Super Session-The Future of Retail; the mobile
consumer, engaging via social, and leveraging Big Data and Analytics

THIS YEAR'S STORE Conference was a resound-

ing success. Among the most well attended sessions
at the conference was a panel discussion with senior
leaders in retail discussing the future of the industry.
Hot topics addressed were: the mobile consumer, engaging via social media, and how to leverage data and
analytics. Diane J. Brisebois, President and CEO of
Retail Council of Canada moderated the panel discussion. Panelists included Willy J. Kruh, Global Chair
of Consumer Markets for KPMG International, Sam
Sebastian, Managing Director for Google Canada, and
Steve Irvine, Group Director, Global Marketing Solutions at Facebook Canada. The following highlights
the discussion about the future of retail in Canada.

a publication its global CM practice issues
quarterly, 90% of the data in the world today
was created between 2011 and 2013.

Brisebois: We want to have a candid conversation
with our panelists about what they see in retail, and
what they can share about today's customer to help
us run our businesses more effectively. Beginning
with Willy, given your global experience, can you
paint a picture of what you see in retail today?
Kruh: The business of retail is obvious; it's the execution
that is the hard part. Here are some interesting stats;
* The Canadian e-commerce market will continue
to experience annual double-digit growth to reach
$34 billion by 2018. (Source: L2/Google Report on
Omnichannel Retail in Canada, 2014)
* According to Google data, there are over 100 billion product searches on Google every month
* In a recent survey by Emphatica, a provider of
social Customer Experience Management (CEM)
programs that surveyed 6,500 people, 73 per cent
of Canadians indicate that they were influenced
by Facebook when making a purchase decision
