from Burt's Bees (The Clorox Company of
Canada), for Personal Care and Innovative
Packaging. The beautiful bottles feature
designs of flowers made from bits of fruit
and snowflakes. The graphics, like the
product, scream clean, natural and fun.
The award for Consumer Acceptance
went to Dempster's Garden Vegetable Bread
from Canada Bread Company-100% whole
wheat bread with finely ground carrot and
pumpkin baked inside. Every two slices contains a half-serving of real vegetables.
T-Fall OptiGrill from Groupe SEB-with
technology that senses food thickness
and has pre-set cooking temperatures and
times-won for Healthy Innovation. That
goes to the product that demonstrates exceptional value and quality to consumers,
and meets the Health Check Criteria based
on Canada's Food Guide. OptiGrill fits on a
countertop, is easy to clean, and offers consistent grilling for any prerefence.
This year's Canadian Grand Prix was
open to manufacturers and distributors of
all sizes, for products introduced during
2013. Winners emerged from 89 finalists.
All finalists and winners can use the Grand
Prix logo on their packaging for two years.

Grocery landscape is shifting

The product ingenuity seen in the
Grand Prix is as important as ever. More
and more, reports Nielsen, consumers
buy on sale, stock up when something is
on promotion, use coupons, and buy lower-priced store or name brands.
Nielsen says grocery sales are shifting
increasingly to discount retailers-from
just over one-third in 2007 to 43 per cent
in 2013, rising to an expected 51 per cent
in 2017. Those retailers don't always have
large variety, and it can be a challenge for
innovators to break in.
