products and services and retailers are innovating fast
to meet expectations and drive growth

CANADIAN retailers are navigating a complex and increas-

ingly competitive marketplace that's being transformed for
a digital age by emerging technologies and evolving demographics. The race is on to meet unprecedented challenges
with innovations that range from reinventing the traditional
bricks-and-mortar shopping experience to reshaping retailing's entire ecosystem for instant digital access to products,
services and information.
The need to innovate is undeniable, of course, amid the
daunting array of critical challenges industry players of all
sizes are grappling with, whether fostering loyalty among
current customers, attracting new shoppers, competing
with new entrants in the marketplace, responding to digital
disruption or addressing volatile economic conditions.
In many cases, smart players are going 'back to the
basics' of retailing with an intense new focus on understanding and catering to the needs of connected customers and their diverse preferences, tastes, behaviours and

expectations. From 'uber-digital' millennials, to aging
boomers eagerly embracing digital technology and social
media, today's mobile, multi-device-wielding consumers
seek instant access to an endless selection of products
and services.
The 'point-of-sale' has transcended the traditional
in-store transaction and the customer is the new pointof-sale. Shoppers now browse, research, buy and share
whenever they choose. Leading retailers welcome the
digitized marketplace as an immense opportunity to cultivate a deeper understanding of the shopping journey
and cater to consumers in new ways that drive loyalty,
open new markets and generate growth.
Canadian Retailer and KPMG Canada recently brought
together some of Canadian retailing's most-innovative
thought leaders to discuss today's challenges and how
they are working as never before to place the consumer
at the heart of everything they do.
