RESEARCH
RETAIL SALES INDICATE THAT CONSUMER SPENDING MAY
BE RECOVERING

Retail sales in Canada rose by 0.6 per cent this past July indicating,
perhaps, that the Canadian consumer is on the brink of spending again
as the country's economy continues on the path of positive growth
According to Statistics Canada, Canadians spent $40.3 billion in the
month of July. These numbers marked a reverse of the decline seen in
the previous month and a significant increase in the same month over
the previous year.

FORECAST
U.S. HOLIDAY RETAIL SALES EXPECTED
TO GROW SLOWLY IN 2013

Retail sales in the U.S. experienced weak
performance during the back-to-school shopping period. Because of this indicator, American analysts are predicting slower growth
during the upcoming holiday shopping season.
Retail revenue is expected to rise by 2.4 per
cent during the 2013 holiday shopping season,
according to Chicago-based researcher ShopperTrak, compared to a 3 per cent increase in
2013 over 2011.
In addition, ShopperTrak also predicts
fewer store visits per customer this holiday
season, as customers are increasingly researching product online before heading out
to a store to purchase.
ShopperTrak, which counts foot traffic
at 60,000 stores and blends it with government figures and its own proprietary sales
numbers from stores, offers one of the first
insights into how shoppers might spend
during the season. It expects traffic to fall 1.4
per cent during November and December,
compared with a 2.5 per cent increase in
2012. A figure due to consumers researching purchases prior to shopping trips and
the shorter shopping window between Black
Friday and Christmas. There were 32 days
during the traditional holiday shopping period in 2012, compared to only 25 in 2013.
