begun to build bigger ships that can carry
more ocean containers per voyage.
"Ten years ago the largest container ships in
the world could carry approximately 5,000 40foot containers," Toksoy says. "In the last decade, and particularly in the last two or three
years, this trend has increased dramatically.
Now the largest ships being built have the capacity to hold 8,000 to 9,000 40-foot containers.

associated with ocean shipping by more than 30 per cent."
A few other supply chain best practices include shared transportation methods, which is really taking off in the U.K., optimizing warehouse space, and smarter scheduling.
"Ryder has operated shared import networks for small-to
medium-sized retailers for many years," says Toksoy. "Those
structures facilitate options such as improving cubing of imported containers by consolidating across customers; increasing
the frequency of shipments from low-volume sourcing locations
while lowering the per cubic feet cost; by going from Less Container Loads to Full Container Loads shipments through sharing
of container space between customers; and by carrying out the
network optimization improvements already mentioned."
Other examples on the domestic front for reducing carbon
footprint include reducing empty backhaul miles in transportation networks.
"Through the use of sophisticated planning and execution
systems and methodologies, significant reduction in transportation miles can be achieved by better routing," says Toksoy.
"This translates into cost and greenhouse gas reductions."
