Lesson 4: Find the right balance

Arriving at packaging solutions that serve different masters
can yield various benefits, but is also tricky. "It's a delicate balance," says Staples' Pearson. "There's the pursuit of sustainability in terms of the environment, but packaging also has a purpose in protecting the product. You have to find the right mix."
Pontello uses similar terms, saying "the objective of our team
is to optimize packaging that
balances the marketing needs
and environmental concerns,
while maximizing the impact
of sales." Blake talks about
sustainability in much broader terms being about people and profit, as well as planet.
He acknowledges that progress around sustainable packaging can be seen as slow, which frustrates some critics. He
says it costs about $1 billion to collect and sort all the Blue Box
programs across the country, "and there's probably another $1
billion worth of valuable packaging material still going into
landfill in Canada."
Sustainable packaging is a "journey of discovery", says Blake,
which often involves three steps forward and two steps back.
He mentions the Capri Sun juice pouch, which uses substan-

tially less material than its rigid counterparts,
yet can't be readily recycled or composted.
Some NGOs have pressured Kraft to alter the
packaging, although retailers and consumers
like the format. "There's a balance that has to
be found," says Blake.

Balance-it's hard to find, whether doing right
by the environment and the product, finding
the right cost structures for packaging, or satisfying consumer needs.
There's no simple answer, just a challenge
and a big question. "The retail industry has
a desire to be seen as doing the right sort of
things," says Blake. "So how do you integrate
sustainability into the overall value/performance proposition? That's the real trick."
