Canadian Retailer - Fall 2016 - 4

PUBLISHER'S DESK

The changing face of
technology; when more
means less
WHEN the topic of technology in the
shopping environment was brought up
only five years ago, images of digital
screens, interactive displays and
automated self-checkout stations that
beep and buzz with each transaction to
"enhance efficiency" and reduce costs
was exciting news for retailers.
Today the discussion is taking on a much different tone. Now,
technology is seen as a means by which to increase revenue rather
than reduce cost. To do so, many of the country's leading techsavvy retailers are leveraging technology to reduce friction in the
path to purchase and put customers' personal needs and wants at
the centre-both in-store and online.
We're hearing about personalization everywhere-and how this
is being executed is unique to every retailer. 'The Future of Retail'
Technology Roundtable (pgs. 12-17) highlights a recent discussion
involving some of Canada's leading retailers, how they are using
technology today and where they want to take it into the future. The
panel talked about everything from beacons and customer-driven
data to inventory tools and predictive analytics, and the ways that
these advancements can help retailers more seamlessly serve
their customers. For a closer look at some of these technologies,
including the use of augmented reality, drones and wearables, read
'Technology For The Good' (pgs. 20-23), where we analyze the
power of some of these innovations and their potential applications.
The current health of e- and m-commerce is explored in our
articles 'E-commerce Next Practices' (pgs. 24-27) and 'The State of
Mobile Payments' (pgs. 28-31) and where each of these distinct yet
integral modes of payment are heading. We're also excited about
the just-released findings of Retail Council of Canada (RCC) and
Forrester's eCommerce Benchmark Survey. This comprehensive
study is available to all RCC members, with some of the interesting
observations featured at the front of the magazine on page 8.
Retail today is inseparable from technology and e-commerce.
And, increasingly the use of these tools by retailers is becoming
more about listening and understanding what consumers want and
"effortlessly" applying creativity to delight their guests at any and
every interaction. The potential of the technology-enabled retail
experience is just beginning and we look forward to providing you
with a sneak preview in the coming issues.
