e all want to be current because current is cool. And what's more
current or cooler than the newest technology? Inside the retail store,
knowing which technologies can have the largest impact is usually
an open question. This Retailer's Guide looks at how to think about technology
investments to get the most out of every dollar and every minute.
don't start with technology

When thinking about technological investments, it's a mistake to start with
a discussion about technology, says Noah Godfrey, founder of Checkout 51, an
app that gathers insights into customer spending.
"When you're talking about technology, there is no silver bullet that satisfies every need," says Godfrey. "Whatever you do, don't pursue technology for
technology's sake." New technologies might generate excitement but they can
create more problems than they solve if they don't address the underlying retail
need-and those needs are often fundamental to the business and fundamental
to the retail sales process.
Godfrey suggests that retailers examine their key metrics: where do they need
to improve? Does the store need to increase basket size? Does it need to engage
current shoppers at a more personal level? Or does the store need to do more to
understand who buys which products, and which products aren't moving?
Start with a needs analysis and look broadly at solutions, including non-technical solutions. Don't get mesmerized by the siren's call of the newest gadget.
