As citizens line up to buy or return gifts during the Holiday Season,
RONA and Call2Recycle remind them to be safe, responsible and
recycle their used batteries!
IN his 2014 report 'Seasonal Factors in Retail-

ing', Deloitte's Dr. Daniel Bachman defines the
holiday season as November through January.
This is time when consumers flood the stores
and retailers spruce up their products to make
them more appealing, in an attempt to bolster
sales in the last quarter.
During the busy Holiday Season when so
many products with batteries are sold, Call2Recycle Canada, Inc., Canada's national consumer
battery recycling organization, and RONA, a
major Canadian retailer, encourage Canadians
to take some extra steps to keep their near and
dear ones safe and to make a positive impact on
the environment.
The winter holiday season is traditionally
a time for celebration and joy. Unfortunately,
statistics show that incidents of home fires and
electrical accidents typically increase during
winter months. According to the National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA), 30 per cent of
home fire and 38 per cent of home fire deaths
occur during the holiday season.
There are steps that can be taken to reduce
the risks of death and injury from a home
fire this holiday season, such as testing and
changing the batteries in all smoke alarms and
carbon monoxide detectors. While doing so, it
is important for all to remember that properly
disposing of the used batteries keeps them out
of our landfills.
After a wonderful festive season, retailers
like RONA offer an extended gift return period
when customers line up to exchange or return
holiday gifts. This is a great opportunity for
consumers to bring in used batteries for recycling in a responsible manner. As customers arrange to swap/return gifts after the holiday, it's
a good time to check those drawers and secret
places for hoarded batteries as well.
It is so important to keep reminding consumers that old cellphones and used batteries found
in homes, like those from TV remotes, laptops,

game consoles and power tools, can be dropped off at convenient
Call2Recycle locations across Canada, including many retailers
like RONA. Call2Recycle recycles and reuses batteries in the
production of useful products such as silverware, golf clubs, new
batteries and so much more, preserving valuable resources.
