Canada Post's Rita Estwick recognized
for her significant contribution to the
loss prevention field

IN her many years working in the industry, Rita Estwick
has seen loss prevention turn from being a "lock the door"
function into a strategic component of retail that is discussed in the executive suite and provides real value to
businesses of all sizes. The recipient of Retail Council of
Canada's (RCC) 2015 Loss Prevention Lifetime Achievement Award believes the industry is in good shape, and
that its prospects for the future are bright. A new generation of professionals are entering the workforce,
armed with the knowledge and expertise to fight the
new threats to retailers' security.
Years ago, threats were rather limited and were
generally well understood-external theft, break
and enter and, as always, internal loss.
"In those days, loss prevention was a question
of who was going to lock the door?" says Estwick,
director of security strategy at Canada Post. "But
as the world changes and retailers increasingly
embrace omni-channel there are a whole new range
of digital threats. Retailers now have to look at the
back- and front-end processes. The thief today may be
halfway around the world instead of halfway around the
block. Instead of thinking 'if' I get attacked it's now a matter
of 'when.'"
Strategy and focus
During her career, Estwick gained a reputation for establishing strategic partnerships with business and law enforcement communities. She placed an important focus on information sharing and preventive strategies for risk and fraud
reduction and has seen that approach being incorporated
into organizational strategic plans.
