PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY J IM DOUGL AS, ORCGA PRESIDEN T & CEO Happy Anniversary AS WE CELEBRATE our 10-year anniversary, I recall with fond memory my first encounter with the U.S.-based Common Ground Alliance (CGA) in 2002, participating in a best practice committee meeting and thinking this CGA idea would work well in Ontario In 2004, after serving as a volunteer, I was fortunate enough to be appointed the first ever Executive Director of the Ontario Regional Common Ground Alliance (ORCGA). Initially excited at the thought of guiding a new entity in Ontario. This excitement was quickly followed by great apprehension when I realized how fragmented the damage prevention industry was in Ontario at the time. A great deal has happened since those early days. The ORCGA has been very successful in galvanizing the damage prevention industry by helping the stakeholders understand that “damage prevention is a shared responsibility.” As indicated by our timeline on the front cover, you will see many examples of our successes. Whether they highlight best practices, DIRT, dig safe, our annual events, Bill 8 or other achievements, this incredible success is the result of a great deal of hard work by many people. S P R I N G 13 I often speak about our volunteers and how they have played an instrumental role in every facet of the alliance’s success. There is another huge factor that has contributed greatly to our success. I’m referring of course to the financial support that has been graciously provided by our Gold, Silver & Bronze sponsors. The ORCGA has achieved a great deal since our inception in 2003; however, there is much to do! We need to now spread our success to all parts of the province and include all of our stakeholders. Since this edition is my last Ear to the Ground as magazine editor, I wish to pass on my sincere thanks to all our members and to the volunteers for your dedication. It has continued to inspire me every day that I am in this job. I’m also very grateful to Brenda Dobrindt and Lori O’Doherty. They are two of the most dedicated individuals that I have had the pleasure of working with throughout my career.
