RMEL INFORMATION

Letter from the
2019-2020 RMEL President

I

IN THE FIRST ISSUE of the magazine each year,
the RMEL President typically takes a moment
to share the state of the Association and the
great venues and programs the RMEL Education
Committees and staff have planned throughout the upcoming year. Like previous years, the
2020 calendar was full of member-driven content,
and we had a strong start to the year! Now, we
find ourselves pausing our current educational
model, canceling or postponing events and reexamining our means of providing education and
networking to best address the current needs of
our membership.
We have all witnessed the quickly evolving
and changing outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Electric utilities were some of the first
to realize the severity of the situation and act
quickly. Incredibly selfless employees of RMEL
member companies are doing what we do
best - working to keep the lights on. From the
challenges of continuing to manufacture the
parts and pieces, to engineering, operating and
maintaining the lines, substations and power
plants. It takes all of us working together to keep
the power flowing. In these challenging times,
with many of us working from home, it is more
critical than ever that our communities have
confidence that the lights will stay on. Utilities are
working closely with their communities, forgiving late bill payments and canceling shut offs.
We are all working together while staying apart
to keep Americans safe.
We don't know when this will end. Unlike a
natural disaster that rips through an area quickly,
there is no clear end date in sight. We do know
that this will go down in history as a time of resiliency and strength; two things that are at the very

core of this industry's reputation. I am confident
that we will all tackle these challenges like we
have before and come out stronger. When I think
about how we will accomplish that, I look to the
strategic and technological successes of the past
couple of years alone. Time and time again, the
people of this industry turn each and every challenge into an opportunity.
RMEL is going to have updates very soon on
some very exciting virtual opportunities to continue with our association's core value of sharing
and collaboration. We're all dealing with similar
challenges, and we're all trying different things
to maintain reliability and serve our customers
during these unprecedented times. The more
we come together and share our experiences
through RMEL, the more we can all succeed.
What a phenomenal day it will be when we can
all meet again at RMEL events. Until then, there
will be several e-Learning opportunities that will
complement all of the conferences, roundtables
and workshops we typically all enjoy attending. Just like the electric energy industry, our
association will come out of this stronger with
more opportunities for involvement. I can't wait
to see you all - online and eventually in-person.
Thank you, everyone, for all that you're doing!
Stay safe and healthy!

Joel Bladow
2019-2020 RMEL President
