"Building a relationship is more on you, than on the other person," he
said. "If they ask you to do something, you go the extra mile. You never
know where the journey is going to take you, but doing your part is such
a vital aspect."

A MYR GROUP COMPANY

"CONTROL YOUR MIND. DON'T LET YOUR MIND
CONTROL YOU."
Toward the end of his keynote, Merril left the audience with this profound
statement of "controlling your mind versus letting your mind control you."
In his journey of overcoming numerous obstacles, continuously adapting
and improving the same basic principles and methodologies that he started
with at 12-years-old, he described the importance of filling your mind with
positive thoughts to zero in on your goals and take action.
In a telling anecdote during the Emerging Leader session, he talked about
the importance of "watching the tape" during his time at ESPN. "My job was
to present football, but I didn't read articles or watch other sports shows.
I just watched the tape. That's the only way to do it and the only way to
see it. All I needed to know was what the tape was telling me. I trust that."
It took about 60 hours of watching tape to get roughly seven minutes
of airtime, but that meant he was able to present a pure and accurate
assessment of the game.
"Whatever principles exist in your environment, stick to your own truth,"
Merril said. "If you control your mind, you have a serious advantage. When
you fill your mind full of positive thoughts of what you're striving for and
that's all you see, you have less time for your mind to wander down the
failure or doubt road. And then you take action."
Merril's message held encouraging insights for the audience, both personally and professionally, which is important in a time and industry where
most people are asked to do more with less.
The resiliency of this workforce is more critical than ever before. RMEL
is grateful to Merril Hoge for sharing an experience that affords the next
generation of leaders the chance to step back and examine how they will
lead the future. Merril's profound, direct and succinct message has provided
these RMEL Emerging Leaders and all of the 2019 Spring Conference attendees with the tools to migrate through the myriad challenges ahead.

Renew Your Arc Flash Study Today
Protect your employees and avoid severe financial penalties!
NFPA requires all arc flash analysis data be reviewed when changes to the
electrical system occur, or at least once in five years, whichever comes first.
Regular evaluation of electrical hazards is essential to ensure worker
safety and compliance.
Are you compliant with the most recent updates of NFPA 70E standard and
IEEE 1584 guide?
