(APS) joined the Energy
Imbalance Market (EIM) in 2016,
the value to our customers quickly
became apparent. This real-time
market allows for real-time buying and selling
energy, enhancing reliability and boosting savings
for participants. For APS, the ability to buy and sell
power to our neighboring utilities in five-minute
increments yielded a total savings of $30.5 million
in the first year alone.
Participation in the market also created an
opportunity to improve our use of data to minimize deviations between generation and market targets, ultimately saving customers money
through better cost management. Unfortunately,
existing generation monitoring solutions did not
provide real-time, filterable or scalable results, and

the results had limited availability. This created a
trickle-down effect of decisions that were being
made on assumptions and estimates, risking
potential negative financial impact. There had
to be a better way.
Faced with the prospect of improved efficiency
and greater savings, we knew we had an opportunity to fine-tune our operations so that we could
perform as close to market targets as possible. By
doing this, we could lower financial risk by making
better decisions on fuel purchases, energy trades
and maintenance. The efficiencies gained through
these efforts would yield additional savings that
we would ultimately pass along to our customers.
Simple, right?
Not exactly.
Our team had our work cut out for us. Over
the course of a day, there can be numerous
