INNEAPOLIS-BASED XCEL ENERGY IS
a utility industry leader providing
clean, safe, reliable energy to customers spanning eight Western and
Midwestern states. In addition to providing reliable energy and reducing carbon emissions, the company is focused on ways to embrace
new innovation and technology, improve efficiencies and provide cost savings for its customers.
One of the ways it's doing that is through the use
of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), also known
as drones.

In recent years, the company has emerged as a
utility industry leader in how it uses UAS-both
to inspect its critical infrastructure like power lines
and substations, and to gather data to support the
company's advanced distribution management
system (ADMS).

GATHERING DATA FOR ADMS
In 2017, Xcel Energy began gathering and verifying data for its advanced grid intelligence and
security initiative in its Colorado service territory.
The goal of this initiative is to create a modern grid
